Pyrite Lady (“Bonny”)
Pyrite Lady, known by friends and family as Bonny, retired from racing and became a broodmare for several years. Once she reached a point where a more leisurely life was her best option, she came to Safe Harbor for retraining. Bonny spent several years at Safe Harbor as a walk-trot lesson horse, camp horse and trail horse with our former executive director. Those who have attended our events likely saw her giving pony rides to kids or as one of our featured retired racehorses. She went on loan to LMU Vet School for a year to teach future veterinarians the basics of handling, bandaging, radiographs and other fun skills. Now Bonny has returned to Safe Harbor, where she will remain in our sanctuary program for as long as she is comfortable. Bonny requires aluminum natural balance shoes every 5 weeks, at a cost of $90 per shoeing, to maintain a level of soundness. She enjoys twice-daily meals of Purina Impact 14% and soaked alfalfa pellets, plus 24/7 access to beautiful pasture, a fly mask in the summer months and a blanket in the winter.
Bonny’s care is partially sponsored by her former owner. You can join as a sponsor for as little as $5 per month, here.
