Maximus (Max II)
Maximus joined Safe Harbor in the summer of 2025. He lived most of his life on a local ranch, and was said to be well known by the ranching community at one point. When his two equally elderly companions were euthanized due to chronic laminitis, Max needed a safe, soft landing to live out his life.
Aged in his mid-20’s, Max has numerous, complex health issues which we are working through from ‘worst’ to ‘least concerning.’ First and foremost, he has Cushings, which makes him more prone to seasonal laminitis. After some hoof soreness, he is now in special shoes and living a life of no grass pastures. He’s also on medication for Cushings (which addresses the symptoms but is not a ‘cure’.) He has gray horse melanoma (not especially uncommon or concerning unless it interferes with bodily functions or goes internal), has a mild heart murmur which may or may not disappear with good nutrition, and shows mild liver disfunction on bloodwork.
Needless to say, we are working toward a life of pasture soundness. He currently seems comfortable and has become much more content with daily handling.
Max’s extensive care costs are partially covered by his foster family. Additional sponsors for this hard luck old man are appreciated.
